Step 1: Walking for health…

Today, I started walking again. As a writer, I spend a lot of my day sitting in a chair  with a computer on my lap. Consequently, my arms and legs and circulatory system have begun to complain.

When I lived in Bloomington, I walked every evening, sometimes for an hour or more. With Bloomington’s hilly streets, this kept me in excellent shape. Over the past 12 years I’ve let those good habits slide into slumpy poor ones. So, this morning became the first day of the rest of my life, so to speak. Instead of beginning my day in the chair, I started it on my feet, pounding the sidewalks and pavements in our neighborhood. With the Lord’s help, I’ll do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the one after that. Two weeks of walking should form the habit. Please keep me in your prayers as I step into a healthier lifestyle.

  1. Back in January I began a low carb diet…but it wasn’t a diet, it was a new lifestyle. I had shaved off 15 lbs and then allowed life to distract me. Up to that time I had started walking and working out. Felt great. Been struggling to keep myself from gaining so I’m joining you to start off walking regularly again and I plan to get back into working out!

  2. It’s 14 days later and I hope your still at it. Walking is by far the best way to restart an exercise routine. Key thing is sticking with it and the key thing about sticking with it is to take your time. Begin slowly. Most people overdo it at first, get sore or injured and quit. They don’t take the time to plan out a walking routine or they don’t spend the time and effort to get proper shoes and equipment. As with writing a bit of thinking and planning up front will make all the difference in your outcome.

Keep at it and good luck

Thanks, Tom and David! Yep, I’m still haunting the streets of Shelbyville early in the mornings. The school kids wonder what the heck I’m doing, especially this morning in the rain! I feel so good on the days when I walk — had to take the weekend off due to buckets of rain. Love it! And pre-walk stretching really helps.
